A taste of Italy

Canoli. There. I said it. I'm in the midst of a love affair with all things Italian. Canoli in particular. Having just come back from Italy I'm desperate to relive the 'sweet' memories I stuffed myself with every chance I got. With only one insurmountable regret - not trying the decadent looking Torte del Nonno when I had the chance - I have come home eager to find out if Melbourne's Italians still have what it takes. Well that and finding a slice of Torte del Nonno to rival the one that 'got away' in Florence.

Frank's Cakes had been on my list of places to visit for some time. Finally I got the email. "Any interest in Coffee at Franks this Sunday??" Say no more! I'm there. Not where you would expect to find an authentic Italian pasticceria, this little gem is in outer (and I mean outer) suburbia. Ferntree Gully to be exact. Good news for those who, like me, don't want to traipse into the city to experience decent food.

From traditional meat lasagne, arancini and a variety of foccacias to all sorts of delightful cakes both small and large, this place has it all. If melt-in-the-mouth biscuits are your thing there are dozens of varieties to choose from and you buy them by weight. Gelati, nougat, panettone, chocolates, lollies...the list of goodies you can buy goes on and on. Birthday cakes can also be snapped up for something a little more decadent.

I'm told Frank's Cakes gets pretty busy. We were there at 2.30 on a sunny Sunday afternoon and had no trouble getting a park or a table outside on the balcony. Our coffees came with beautifully wrapped chocolates and yes we both ordered (and enjoyed) the canoli. Not quite the same as the ones I drooled over in Italy but pretty damn close!
