Monash Gallery of Art

Photography. Photography. Photography. That's what this art gallery is all about. For photo buffs like me it's an easy outing on a grey Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Best of all, its free!

As well as owning a permanent collection the Monash Gallery of Art is host to up to 20 exhibitions a year and includes artist talks, guided tours, concerts and children's programs.

During my visit the gallery was exhibiting the works of the finalists for the 2012 Bowness Photography Prize. The Bowness Photography Prize was established in 2006 by the MGA Foundation and has very few restrictions. Both film and digital work are accepted from amateurs and professionals alike. Not to be sneezed at, first prize is a mere $25,000! Who couldn't use that bit of spare change? 2012 winner Jesse Marlow has the honour of being the first to win the Bowness Prize with street photography.

Coffee and cake or even a light lunch is in order before departing. The MGA Cafe offers up such goodies as vegetarian gourmet pizzas for one, focaccias, cakes, biscuits and cold and hot drinks. Having already eaten lunch I settled on a skim latte (which came rather strong) and a heart shaped jam biscuit. The cafe is light and pleasant and reading material is on hand for those who visit alone as I did.

Before you leave spend some time in the gift shop. Photography books, jewellery, bags, children's art products, cards, lamography cameras, notepads and lots of unique and creative gifts can be discovered. Perfect for finding an unusual Christmas or birthday present.
